"Homework Companion"

Awww... this is such a sweet painting. I mean, what's cuter than a giant puppy helping a little girl with her homework on a picnic table? Not much. Besides being cute, this painting catches my eye with various textures and earthy colors, which bring it to life. There's the hair, both long and short, wood grain going all different directions, grass/dirt, book pages, skin, and fabric; all these elements provide a vibrancy to the picture that the colors don't have, but the few touches of warmth make the mood still pleasant. Almost like the colors in the puppy are cheering up the sad/cold homework side of the painting. Sound familiar? Even though I may not be the little girl doing homework with my puppy, I can still relate to a puppy changing my mood. Do you remember a time when your puppy brightened the day?

This painting is based off a photo a friend took; I wanted to capture something out of my usual and I guess experiment with a trickier subject, since I am still new to pastel. This was also the biggest pastel I had started at the time and it made me decide that I definitely like painting large pastels the best.
