"Lazy Day Cat"

Simple and sweet. Cozy, tired, soft, warm and fuzzy.... all words that come to mind when first viewing this painting. It’s a tired cat that seems to have just woken up from a nap. The soft blanket presses against his squished cheek. His eyes are dark and sink back, but the light brings his nose up close. The clear direction of light gives the painting contrast and depth, while guiding my eyes through. For example, the illuminated whiskers fill the shadow of the cat’s head, keeping my eyes from falling off the bright side of the painting. Also, the fuzziness of the pastels and the slightly sporadic use of color, add to the all-in-all mood of the lazy cat.

This painting I created specifically for the Wy’east Artisans Guild 2018 Annual Show, which had the theme "Creatures Great and Small". I had a hard time deciding on a reference, so I narrowed it down to 2 photos (my cat or my dog) and made a poll on Facebook for everyone to vote on. The lazy cat won, even though I was secretly hoping the dog would win, so I had a month to complete it before the show. It turned out a little different then my other pastels but I’m still happy with it, though I’m still gonna paint the picture of my dog sometime soon.
