"Peddling Onward "

I could stare at this piece for hours... I get lost in the motion of the strokes that make the wheel spin and grass flow past. The rich vibrant colors that are captured throughout the elements are so peaceful to look at, that combined with the simple composition, make for an intriguing piece like this. First my eye goes to the shoe, then my eye follows the pants up to the bag in the basket, and lastly it goes down the wheel which circles back to the peddle and the shoe. After absorbing all of the details as my gaze goes in circles, I begin to wonder what's actually going on, since this is such a small segment of what could be happening; where is the person going, maybe just to work or maybe on some type of adventure, what is their plan for the day, or who is the person going to see?... What do you observe is happening around the focus of this painting?

I chose to paint this bicycle for a project in my pastel class at MSOA because I was a fan of the technical simplicity that the reference photo had. It had the potential to tell a story and that’s what I strived to emphasize through the painting. I enjoyed finding all the colors within the objects and smearing them onto this large paper to create what is now probably my new favorite piece ;)
